Menopause Demands You Spoil Yourself

For all the jokes, memes, medications, secrecy, and comments that swirl around menopause, there’s one thing that’s easy to miss: menopause is normal. It’s not a disease or a disorder!

Even though it’s a shared female experience, there’s a lot of variety in how women experience menopause. But one thing we can all agree on is that it’s a change in our physical, emotional, and hormonal selves.

So, what’s the best way to make the change as good as possible? We say spoil yourself!

‘Spoil yourself’ isn’t exactly breakthrough science or anything, but after puberty, PMS, careers, pregnancies, motherhood, raising teenagers, having relationships, and all the other massive changes you’ve been through as a woman, menopause should absolutely be the thing that makes you stop and say, ‘I’m spoiling myself and loving it!’.

This approach is even more necessary—and more challenging—during the COVID-19 pandemic. Women are experiencing extra demands with fewer resources available to address those demands. Every solution, every special moment, every break from the stress can help to ease the pressure, even if it’s just for a little while.

We started a list of ways to spoil yourself. There’s a lot of room to add to it!

  • Use a luxurious skin cream. Many women see their skin dry out as estrogen levels decrease.
  • Look for the foods that make you feel good physically, and enjoy them. If it’s super healthy but it tastes terrible, forget it! If it’s super healthy, wonderful to eat, and you feel good after, go for it!
  • Pamper your hair. It changes along with the rest of your body.
  • Do all the good sleep habits. Gorgeous pajamas and sheets (maybe the kinds that help keep your body cool), a routine that makes you feel relaxed, fresh air and sunlight during the day… whatever helps you sleep.

One more thing: menopause can be the door that allows you to fully step into being you. Sex now has nothing to do with pregnancy (or preventing pregnancy!), your body is completely your own to nourish and love, and you get to have a whole new perspective on who you are and what you want. Enjoy!
